The title comes from the philosophical idea that the universe essentially only exists as you perceive it through what you know; therefore, if you change your perception of the universe with new knowledge, you have essentially changed the universe itself.

To illustrate this concept, James Burke tells the various stories of important scientific discoveries and technological advances and how they fundamentally altered how western civilization perceives the world. When people knew the earth was flat and it was the center of the universe, all life revolved around that truth. Galileo's telescope changed the truth. And with that one change, all architecture, music, literature, science, politics -- everything changed, mirroring the new view of truth. This tape is James Burke's examination of the moments in history when a change in knowledge radically altered man's understanding of himself and the world around him.

Few people are able to look at human history and see it not as a jumble of half-remembered names and dates, but as an intricate mosaic of neatly interlocking pieces. Fewer still can describe the patterns and explain the parts of the puzzle so that it not only makes sense, but so that it also fascinates and intrigues, excited and entertains.

Personally, I found this book to be very intriguing and it really helped to open my eyes to the modern world that we live in. Burke does a nice job of walking you through major events, and explains in-depth how exactly these events effect us today. In the introduction, Burke says, "We are what we know. And when the body of knowledge changes, so do we. Whether it's incorporation of religion, arts, philosophy, and more, Burke brings forward evidence and interesting examples of each change.

I would definitely recommend this book to anyone curious about history and its effects on life today. It's interesting to read about events that you may have heard of, but never really considered to be as important as they are.
